Healthcare or Utopia?

di Gunter Hiller

The healthcare bill. It's a complicated, compromised mess, a knot. (R.D. Laing). Obama is no Franklin Delano Roosevelt. His core constituency, the Left, is unhappy: they want the “single payer plan” like in Canada. But that's politically impossible, because 60% of the americanoes are "happy with what they got", that they will not tear it up for some socialist utopia. Aristotle: the Good is One, the Bad is Many. (Cf. Jesus: Who are you? Answer: I'm Legion).
So Obama, a “pragmatic politician, tries to please everybody (well, “tried”, he now knows that's impossible because the dominant Republicans majority is “hard Right”, just as they were with Goldwater). For them, to defeat Obama is not Everything, it's The Only Thing!
So this bill, opposed by the Left, will narrowly go through, everybody holding their nose! It has been unravel, so at least Republicans won't sink Obama, our Great Black Hope. Yes, it has a few good things in it. That's all you can get when the country is as deeply divided as it is. The Tea Party speaks for itself: “Ignorance is Bliss”. To which I might add that nothing is as dangerous as ignorance in action!
If only....Obama had it in him to give the country a simple vision. However, he cannot see the forest for the trees.  Neither can I.
